A DESCRIPTION OF THE ART

AT LAST! AN EFFECTIVE, RELIABLE AUTOMATIC LID PRESS YOU CAN USE TO PACKAGE YOUR HOT PRODUCTS!

The Automatic Lid Press System (ALPS) was designed to snap lids down on pails even when they are filled with products as hot as 205 degrees fahrenheit. If you're involved in manufacturing high temperature products, you know the problems associated with packaging extremely hot liquid into plastic containers; First there is deformation of the container due to the heat transfer. Then you have to worry about the container collapsing and the product burning your employees. Then, there's the ballooning problem if the container isn't burped properly, which leads to poor handling and stacking. The difficulties seem endless!

Most automatic lid presses use the slow compression method to press the lid home, and this approach won't work on plastic pails when they're full of hot product because the pail deforms. Manual lid presses not only cost more to operate, they carry a risk factor to the employee should hot product escape from the container. Sometimes the product is left for hours to cool in the container before lids are seated, risking contamination and spillage.

All these problems were solved when we designed the AUTOMATIC LID PRESS SYSTEM (ALPS), the first completely new lid press design to hit the market in decades. It features computer controlled servo-motors, auto-induct pail positioning, auto-crimping, and automatic pail ejection when the crimping process is completed. Other features include automatic job setup and changeover, and clear lexan covers to protect employees from product splash and burns.

The ALPS uses servo-motor technology to perform it's main function. A 12 hp. servo-motor drives a platen vertically, and the platen quickly and forcefully snaps the lid in place before the plastic of the pail wall has a chance to deform. However, servos can be used for much more. In the right hands, they can be made to measure! Therefore, the ALPS performs additional functions that may best be described as process control.

By process control, we mean that the ALPS can insure that your automatic (or manual) lid placer has actually set a lid correctly on the pail. Only when that process has been verified does the servo-motor quickly drive the platen down and snap the lid in place. Then, once the pail has been sealed, the servo-motor is used to verify that process also. This verification is done by using computer power to combine encoder technology with servo-motor technology, enabling the system to actually measure the position of the platen to the thousandth of an inch. Therefore, before the pail exits the ALPS, it has been QC verified, ensuring that your packaging process can continue uninterrupted.
