Each 10 minutes your people spend on batteries daily adds up to
1
lost week per year.
Up to a week between charges!
- Many distribution
warehouse operations that have automated their data collection system use battery powered
barcode readers and/or label printers carried by order pickers in holsters or belt packs.
These order-pickers process inventory via radio frequency (RF) links between the barcode
reader and the central computer. As they scan the barcode, the stock is removed from
inventory.
- The batteries that power these RF terminals are generally NiCad, NiMh, or LiIon because of the necessity for electrically clean, high quality power to the barcode terminal. They require periodic re-charging to maintain productivity of the terminal. Consequently the employees
are non-productive while the battery change-over is taking place. Once these batteries are
worn out, they become hazardous waste, with the associated disposal headaches and long
term threat to our environment.
- If you allow 10 minutes per day for battery changing, by the end of a year that time
adds up to 1 man-week. Thats right, by eliminating the 10 minutes per day, you save 1
man-week over a years time. There is also the problem of maintaining the NiCad
supply to guarantee that the barcode scanners never run out of well conditioned, fully
charged batteries. This battery management time is generally spent by first line managers,
who are usually overworked and have no spare time.
- Help is at hand! The APS (Alternative Power System) from Dedicated Digital Technology is
a power converter that links the barcode terminal (or any other battery powered device) to
a large auxliary 12 volt storage battery housed in a utility belt pack. By stepping the
power from 12 volts down to 7.2 volts of clean power that can be used by a barcode
terminal, and by filtering out all the fluctuations common to large batteries, the APS
belt-pack unit greatly extends the time between charges while it is being worn. The
auxillary battery may be sized to last one day or one week, which ever suits your needs.
At the end of the shift, or the end of the week, recharge the auxillary battery with the
charger provided and you are ready to go again.
The APS unit eliminates the need for frequent battery changes, and by doing so increases
the efficiency of your operation. Common ROI on the APS is less than 6 months, but please

page. By filling in the numbers, you can easily
calculate your annual savings.
- The APS is designed to accept any DC voltage (from 11 to 24 volts) available using an
auxliary battery belt pack, and convert it to clean, computer grade power with all the
electrical spikes and sags that can damage a terminal eliminated. The output voltage of
the APS is tunable to fit most power requirements. If your barcode terminals use 7.2 volt
NiCad battery packs, the APS can be tuned to accommodate the voltage. If your label
printer uses 12 volts, the APS can be adjusted to provide power for it.
The APS can be added to your current system without modifying the terminal. This is
achieved by the use of a patented battery blank that looks like the NiCad battery it replaces. It
contains the electronics necessary to convert the power from the auxillary battery to
clean, computer grade for your barcode terminal. If you decide you want to go back to the
original, just replace the blank with a freshly charged NiCad and youre ready to go.
- The typical run life of the APS hip pack unit is 8 eight hour shifts with a battery weight of only 21.78 ounces!
- The typical run life of the APS belt pack unit is 16 eight hour shifts with a battery weight of only 38.76 ounces!
- This new product greatly reduces or eliminates the problems associated with maintaining
a steady supply of freshly charged and conditioned NiCads. It cuts the direct cost of
Nicad batteries to zero for the terminals that use the APS. It also saves the employee
time because he isnt stopping work every 2 to 5 hours for NiCad change-over. The
design life of these APS batteries is up to 2200 recharges, far more than a NiCad. (Replacement
cost is comparable.) All these cost savings, when added up, make the return on investment
for the APS less than 4 months on medium duty applications, and closer to 2 months for high
use facilities (24 hour operations). When you add the cost saving to the benefits of reducing
heavy metals in our environment by disposing of fewer batteries, the decision to purchase
the ALTERNATIVE POWER SYSTEM should be a simple matter of writing the check. Start saving
time and money today plus become a little more earth friendly at the same time!
-Here are some of the
benefits of using the Alternative Power System. All of these ideas came from our customers.
Some of them have been using the APS for over 2 years.
* Using the APS allows former battery users to enable the backlight function on their
terminals while they work. When under NiCad power, the backlight was too much of a drain
on the power resources.
* Using the APS allows employees to concentrate on their work, free from low battery
interruptions. They stay 'in the zone', and can get more accomplished.
* The APS requires no mods to the terminal. This avoids the headaches encountered on a
modified terminal if you need the manufacturers warranty or repair services.
* Maintaining a supply of conditioned batteries is simpler since there is not so much
pressure on the battery conditioner.
